Travel Safety Tips

Whether you’re heading out on a solo adventure, flying to a new city or planning a road trip with friends, traveling during college is a great way to explore and recharge. But before you pack your bags, it’s important to make safety a priority. From staying connected with loved ones to budgeting wisely and preparing your vehicle, these essential travel tips will help you stay safe, organized and ready for a smooth trip—wherever your journey takes you.

Traveling Solo

Safety is of the utmost importance when traveling alone.

  • Let friends and family know when and where you will be throughout your trip. Share your location with them as well.
  • Keep your phone charged and invest in a portable charger so you’re never without power.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Even if you’re visiting a familiar place, stay alert to anything that may seem unsafe.

Airport Travel Tips

  • Download your airline’s app so you can check in ahead of time and access your boarding pass before arriving at the airport.
  • Arrive at least 2 hours before your flight boards. This gives you extra time if security lines are long or unexpected issues come up.
  • Every airport moves at a different pace. Research the airports you’ll be traveling through so you know how much time you’ll need to get to your gate.
  • Keep your belongings with you at all times while in the airport.

Traveling to a New Location

  • Get to know local laws and regulations, especially if they differ from your hometown or state.
  • Read about your destination before you go. Learn about the culture, places to visit, areas to avoid and safe neighborhoods for lodging.
  • Check the weather forecast ahead of time so you can pack appropriately.

Budgeting for Your Trip

Traveling is fun—but it can also be expensive!

  • Start your budget by listing essential costs (gas, plane tickets, food and drinks, lodging, necessary clothing, etc.).
  • Set aside a specific amount for fun activities, souvenirs, and extras.
  • Planning ahead can help you stay on budget while still enjoying your trip.

Road Trip Tips

  • Complete necessary vehicle maintenance before leaving. Oil changes, tire pressure checks and new windshield wipers are all important before a long drive.
  • Keep emergency items in your car, such as:
    • Spare tire
    • Tire pump
    • Flashlight
    • First-aid kit
    • Emergency car tool kit (jumper cables, window breaker, etc.)
  • Map out your route before starting the trip. This helps you plan stops, estimate when you’ll be in certain locations, and provide others with an idea of your timeline.
  • Share your itinerary and location with others. Keeping people updated—such as parents or close friends—helps them know you’re safe and allows them to reach you if needed.
