Traveling Solo
Safety is of the utmost importance when traveling alone.
- Let friends and family know when/where you are going to be throughout your trip. Share your location with these people also.
- Keep your phone charged and invest in a portable charger so your phone never runs out of battery.
- Always be aware of your surroundings. Even if you are traveling to a place you have been before, be alert for anything that might not be safe.
Airport Travel Tips
Every airport is different in terms of quickness getting through security. Research the airport(s) you are using before you travel to ensure you allow yourself adequate time to get to your flight!
- Download the app for the airline you are traveling on to check in ahead of time and download your boarding pass before arriving at the airport.
- Get to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight boards! This will allow you more time in case the security lines are long, you run into an issue, etc.
- When at the airport, make sure to always keep your belongings with you.
Traveling to a New Location
Read about the location before going! This will help you with planning and packing.
- Get to know the local laws in the area if different from where you are from.
- Learn about the culture, places to visit (and perhaps spots to avoid), safe areas to stay, etc.
- Have an idea of what the weather is going to look like before going.
Budgeting for Your Trip
Traveling is fun but also can be expensive! Create a budget to help you not overspend on your trip and still have a great time!
- Start out with putting essential items into your budget (gas money, plane tickets, food & drink, lodging, any essential clothing items you need).
- Allot a certain amount of money you want to spend on fun activities, souvenirs, etc.
Road Trip Tips
Complete necessary maintenance before leaving, and plan ahead!
- Oil changes, pumping up tires, swapping windshield wipers, etc. are all essential tasks to do before hitting the road.
- Items that are important to have in your car in case of an emergency:
- Spare tire
- Tire pump
- Flashlight
- First Aid kit
- Emergency car tool kit (includes items like jumper cables, windshield breaker)
- Map out your route before starting the trip! This allows you to plan your stops, know what time of day you are going to be in certain locations, and have the capability to let people know where you should be and around when you are going to be there.
- Share your itinerary and location with others! Sharing this information with people in your life such as your parents can be worthwhile so others know you reached your destinations safely or can reach you in an emergency.
